ज्ञानेश्वरी-Verses 3,4 and 5

श्रीः

3- हे शब्दब्रह्म अशेष । तेचि मूर्ति सुवेष ।

    तेथ वर्णवपु निर्दोष । मिरवित असे ।।

Meaning- All the syllables from A to Z , vowels , etc. are like शब्दब्रह्म. We must be introvert , but not stay mum all the time. By staying mum , we show our negative self to the world. The descriptions of ज्ञानदेव are like priceless gems and jewels. These important principles must be practised by us in our daily lives. ज्ञानदेव describes Lord Ganesha decorated with jewels and studded with gems as the image of knowledge , filled with letters. It is a divine image which must be developed in a proper form.

4- स्मृति तेचि अवयव । देखा आंगीक भाव ।

     तेथ लावण्याची ठेव । अर्थशोभा ।।

Meaning- Smritis and scriptures are written in order to enhance our knowledge. They contain the jewels of our philosophy. We need to see the bodily and the feelings of the intellect. There , we get pleased by seeing the image of the knowledge personified Lord Ganesha. We become more particular about the thoughts that come to our mind and thus , keep a control on our mind. If we control our mind , we can surely achieve the Supreme while meditating upon that spirit who has created the whole universe.

5- अष्टादश पुराणे । तीचि मणिभूषणे ।

     पदपद्धती खेवणे ।  प्रमेयरत्नाची ।।

Meaning- There are eighteen Puranas which are compared to five पञ्चप्राणाs , five कर्मेन्द्रियाs , five sensory organs and ego , mind and intellect. These eighteen Puranas are like precious jewels and gems. When Arjuna was in a dilemma , and his mind was restless , Lord Krishna having a strong intellect removed Arjuna's restlessness. ज्ञानदेव says that we must pray and meditate upon that spirit which has manifested this whole world. And in order to achieve this , we must train our mind because it is rightly said ,

As mind , so man.

As thoughts , so mind.

We must contemplate upon the form of Lord Ganesha and remember that Om , Guru , Atman , Self and Lord Ganesha are one and the same.

  1. When one contemplated on Geeta by Ch.6, we can practice Dhyana. Aadi Shankar,s Shankara bhashya as well as Jnanashawri helps us a lot in this. Mind and intellect is nothing but flow of thoughts, thought means remembering our past experience from birth onwards! Thus thought by is actually not existing in our present. Our anciety/plans for future are yet to come. Therefore to remain in present is our state of existance free from any kind of thought! As our life is habituated to thoughts, to free us from thoughts is our attempt to meditation. That successful meditation is possible only for a human being. Such pure state of mind is mindless fully truly. One must utilise his life for this end.

  2. Leave the mind aside to reach the no-mind state which alone is meditation, which alone is one's real and original state.
