Kalidasa

Kalidasa is said to be one of the greatest poets of Sanskrit Literature. There are many opinions from scholars regarding the exact birth period of Kalidasa. Some estimates say that his birth period is around the 4 or 5 century.

His usage of words and descriptions are varied and beautifully seen in all his works.His works are as follows-

महाकाव्ये-                              नाटकानि-                      

1-कुमारसम्भवम्।                     1-मालविकाग्निमित्रम्।

2-रघुवंशम्।                             2-विक्रमोर्वशीयम्।

                                             3-अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम्।

खण्डकाव्ये-

1-मेघदूतम्

2-ऋतुसंहारम्।


Kalidasa is famous for 'उपमा' अलङ्कार (Simile). Therefore the phrase 'उपमा कालिदासस्य' is widely known.

Through his writings, we also come to know that he was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.


The following verse is evident to the fact that Kalidasa was a शिवभक्त .This is the first verse of his great epic रघुवंशम्, in which the mother and father of the entire world, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are offered salutations.

वागर्थाविव संपृक्तौ वागर्थप्रतिपत्तये।

जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ।।

  1. This sloka can be split (pada chedam) in two ways- one to mean shiva- Parvathi and other time mean Vishnu- Lakshmi. I have heard about it long ago. Can you please explain that?

  2. All those sincerely study Sanskrit language will enjoy what is real right and love the whole world as well as live a truly worth life fulfilling all purusharth as! Kalidas literature is a treasure in our rich culture and without study of such great literatures one,s education will not be worth.
